Some Funky Fruit

by Amy Rae on October 25, 2009

We stumbled upon these strange little creatures in the park near Gresham Palace this weekend.  A crowd had actually gathered to stare at the fluorescent green bulbs littering the lawn.  Some people were poking them curiously.  Others were kicking them around in confusion.  I thought we had found something truly unique and interesting, so I promptly ordered my friends to fill their pockets.  In my mind, it was an exotic fruit found only in Hungary.  I find things like this immensely exciting.

Double Funky Fruit

I have since learned that the fruit is quite common in the U.S. and elsewhere.  It is called an Osage-orange.  I currently have 19 of them serving as a centerpiece, hogging the fruit bowl, and sort of awkwardly stacked in a glass vase.  I am strangely attached to the wrinkly little fellows, so I thought I would share.  What else am I going to do with green orbs about which Wikipedia says:  “Although not strongly poisonous, eating it may cause vomiting”?
